He theorized that if he could adjust vertebrae in the spine, he would be able to restore proper function to the nerves throughout the body. In 1895, at age 32, Daniel D. Palmer opens a school inside his home with 3 students. The Palmer School of Chiropractic official when students begin classes at a separate building in 1897. Palmer’s first patient is treated with chiropractic care for a neuromuscular disorder. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is founded in 1947. Today, the ACA has more than 60,000 members and represents more than 90% of all chiropractors worldwide. In 1999, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) release a statement declaring that “chiropractic manipulation is useful as a treatment for lower back pain.” Chiropractors are now recognized as legitimate providers of health care by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other government agencies.
